Which SFI Rating Do You Need? SFI 3.2A/1 vs 3.2A/5 vs 3.2A/15

October 21, 2026

Every fire suit we sell carries an SFI 3.2A rating: /1, /5 or /15. That number tells you how long the suit protects you from a second-degree burn in a fire. Picking the right one comes down to what you race and what your sanctioning body requires.

What the SFI number means

SFI Foundation spec 3.2A tests driver suits for Thermal Protective Performance (TPP). The TPP value divided by two gives roughly the number of seconds before a second-degree burn. The higher the rating, the longer you have to get out of the car.

SFI rating Minimum TPP Approx. time to 2nd-degree burn Typical construction
3.2A/1 6 3 seconds Single layer
3.2A/5 19 10 seconds Double layer
3.2A/15 60 30 seconds Multi-layer

Our suits exceed those minimums: Red Camel SFI 3.2A/1 suits are rated above TPP 8, 3.2A/5 suits above TPP 20, and 3.2A/15 suits above TPP 60.

SFI 3.2A/1: single layer

The entry point for certified protection. Light and breathable, it suits bracket drag racing, autocross, track days, karting and club events where a 3.2A/1 suit is the minimum. Our 3.2A/1 suits are made from Proban fire-retardant fabric.

SFI 3.2A/5: double layer

The most popular rating for serious racers. In NHRA drag racing, a 3.2A/5 suit is generally required for cars running 9.99 or quicker, or over 135 mph. It's also the common choice for SCCA and NASA road racing, time attack, oval track and rally. Our 3.2A/5 suits are 100% meta-aramid inside and out.

SFI 3.2A/15: multi-layer

For the highest-risk classes. NHRA calls for 3.2A/15 in many alcohol-fuelled, nitrous and supercharged cars, including Advanced E.T. classes. These classes usually also require SFI 3.3/5 gloves and shoes. Our 3.2A/15 suits are multi-layer meta-aramid.

Don't forget gloves, shoes and a hood

A suit is only part of the system. Many classes require SFI-rated gloves, shoes and head protection to match your suit:

  • SFI racing gloves
  • SFI 3.3/5 racing shoes
  • SFI 3.3 racing hood
  • Snell SA2020 helmets

Same design, any rating

Every Red Camel suit design is made in SFI 3.2A/1, 3.2A/5 and 3.2A/15, so you can keep your look as you move up. Each suit includes free name and flag embroidery and a 12-month limited warranty.

Always check your rulebook

Rules change and differ between sanctioning bodies, tracks and classes. Check the current rulebook for your class before you buy. Not sure? Contact us and we'll help you choose.
